A to Z
- ACME, Let’s Encrypt
- ACME is the protocol for obtaining certificates automatically; Let’s Encrypt is a free certificate authority that uses it.
- A, AAAA record
- IPv4 (A) or IPv6 (AAAA) address associated with a name.
- CGNAT
- One IPv4 address shared between several customers of a provider; devices behind it cannot be reached over IPv4 from the Internet.
- CNAME
- Record that makes a name an alias of another.
- DNS
- System that translates a name (home.nomadns.net) into an IP address.
- DNS-01
- ACME challenge where the authority checks a
_acme-challengeTXT record. - DNSSEC
- Signature of DNS records, letting resolvers check they were not altered.
- Dynamic DNS (DDNS)
- Automatic update of a name when the connection’s IP address changes.
- DynDNS2
- HTTP update protocol understood by most routers and DDNS clients.
- Name server
- Server that publishes a zone’s records; nomadns.net has three: ns1, ns2 and ns3.
- Port forwarding
- Router setting that passes an incoming connection to a device on the local network.
- Public IP address
- Address reachable from the Internet, provided by your ISP. Private addresses (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x…) are not.
- Resolver
- Server that queries the DNS for your devices, such as HostuxDNS. Nomadns is not one.
- Subdomain
- Name under nomadns.net that you choose, for example home.nomadns.net.
- Token
- Identifier and secret specific to one subdomain and one use (updates or certificates), used instead of the account password.
- TOTP
- One-time code, renewed every 30 seconds by an app, for two-step verification.
- TTL
- How long a resolver may keep a reply; 60 seconds on Nomadns.
- Zone
- All the records of a domain; here nomadns.net.
